Debra Thomas is the author of Luz, winner of the 2020 Sarton Award for Contemporary Fiction and Josie and Vic, 2024 WILLA Literary Award finalist. Her third novel, Sanctuary, will be published by Black Rose Writing July 1, 2027. Originally from Binghamton, New York, she’s lived in Southern California most of her adult life. After working a decade as a registered nurse, Debra returned to college to pursue her passion for literature and writing, receiving both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in English. She taught English on the college and high school level, but it was teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults in Los Angeles that led her to become an immigrant rights advocate. She is also an equine advocate whose work reflects a deep passion for wild mustangs, burros, and the healing bond between humans and animals. In addition to volunteering at local equine rescues, she also serves as a Volunteer Ambassador for American Wild Horse Conservation. Sanctuary grew from her love of horses and donkeys and the belief that rescue can be transformative for animals and people alike. When Debra isn’t with her own two horses, she is relaxing with her husband and little dog, delighting in all the birds and critters that visit her backyard feeders.
