LUZ Is Launched!

To Vroman’s Bookstore, my beloved mentors Gayle Brandeis and Alma Luz Villanueva, and everyone who joined me last night for the virtual book-launch celebration of LUZ, thank you all from the bottom of my very full heart! To watch the play back, Click here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/luz

There was so much I wanted to say last night, and despite being nervous (this was my first live event ever), I think I managed to convey most of my deepest thoughts and feelings. There was one small Freudian slip, however. I meant to say that I believe we are all connected, but on playback, I see that I said, “I believe we are all united.”

While on one level, we are beautifully united right now in our fight against racism in support of the black lives matter movement, but, as we all know, there is still much division as well. What I meant to say, about us all being connected, is that if we can focus on our shared experiences and find common ground, perhaps we can begin to bridge this great divide.

There is still much to be done. At least, a powerful progress is in the works. There is hope. But as Zadie Smith observed  “progress is never permanent, will always be threatened, must be redoubled, restated and reimagined if it is to survive.”

As the weeks and months pass, we cannot tire of the fight, can’t weaken our resolve, or look away from any injustice. We must continue to raise our voices together and imagine a much better world where we truly are all united.
