Kirkus Review
Every author awaits their Kirkus Review with some degree of anxiety. It’s an important review. One that is highly respected; one that is sent to librarians and booksellers who hold the fate of a book in their hands. Kirkus is often known to be critical, even cranky at times, laying out the good, the bad, and, yes, the ugly. So when my email arrived proclaiming my review was ready to view, my heart began beating to the tune of “Shake It Off.”
I clicked and held my breath. It began with, “An earnest novel about the journey of a young Mexican immigrant.” It spoke of “a compelling narrator” and “fully rounded individuals” and ended with, “A sensitive but unsparing coming-of-age drama.” All good!
While I know my novel will encounter a wide range of reviews—all novels do—and mine has its controversial aspects, at least for today, I can celebrate this special moment. No shaking off needed.
